'Avatar 2' release date, plot news, updates: James Cameron aiming for higher frame rates, glasses-free 3D in filmmaking

Aside from making "Avatar 2" and two more films all at the same time, which is already ambitious in itself, director James Cameron also plans to make these films visually stunning even without 3D (three-dimensional) glasses.

The filmmaker, whose only focus at the moment is "Avatar 2" and the following sequels, revealed this promising new objective as he accepted honorary membership in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers last week.

"I'm going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rates (HFR)—the things we are working toward," Cameron said as quoted by Indie Wire.

"I'm still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen—with no glasses. We'll get there," he went on to say.

Cameron is known for using avant-garde methods and technology in putting together his films. The director always makes sure that his projects are as rich in technological innovation as they are in plot and characters.

It looks like "Avatar 2" will get the same treatment, which is not entirely a surprise. Not too long ago, it was rumored that Cameron was looking to film in high frame rates.

Slash Film reported that the filmmaker even wanted to shoot the movie at an impressive 120 frames per second (fps). Around that time, it was more of an option, though.

It is unclear if Cameron's objective will affect the timing of the release of "Avatar 2," which is currently scheduled to come out on Christmas in 2018.

The "Avatar" sequel has actually been pushed back already. The director has also given a heads-up that he might beat that date.

He revealed last month to Variety that although the holiday 2018 release for "Avatar 2 is still in place, they will move the date "if we need to."

Cameron's focus is the smaller gap between the launch of the films other than the timing of the release of "Avatar 2," which will be the launching pad for three movies and will set the expectations of viewers release and story-wise.
