Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin fight news: Doubleheader for Cinco de Mayo?

The clamor is out for Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin, but it seems both camps are not yet ready for that big clash.

World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman did make it clear that the fight is mandatory, although he didn't say when it would happen. And now, he seems to be leaning on an entirely different idea, seeing both Alvarez and Golovkin take the ring but face separate foes.

His idea is to have both fighters around for Cinco de Mayo weekend in 2016 but not against each other. It will be a double-header which could be used to build momentum for the blockbuster showdown that should take place at a later date.

Hence, it seems that the idea of the WBC is all about making the fight big (if not bigger) than what many had projected. And if that should be the case, it douses water on earlier apprehensions that Alvarez and Golovkin may not come to an agreement to face off next.

The issue to date is more on Alvarez who is standing pat on the 155-pound catchweight. Many feel that this stipulation should not stand, the same sentiment echoed by Triple G. The WBC as well is not inclined to recognize the stipulation which somehow dampens the possibility of seeing both exciting fighters in the ring.

But with the new pitch, the double-header could also prove as a cool-off of sorts for both fighters until they are able to come with an agreeable scenario. Although an immediate bout would have been neat, the scenario of seeing both face separate fighters at Cinco de Mayo weekend seems like a good move to get both sides settled.

Assuming it does materialize, one can just imagine how both can show off their skills once again and set the stage for a blockbuster fight sometime after that, hopefully under saner conditions and minus the added stipulations.
