'Destiny 2' release date rumors: Bungie pushes back sequel as it works on new DLC packs for current title

Game studio Bungie is still committed to expand "Destiny" with updates and DLC packs (there's one reportedly on the way). However, the focus of many has already shifted to "Destiny 2."

Unfortunately, the "Destiny" sequel is not expected to come out this year as Bungie is busy with a new expansion pack for the original game set to be released later this year.

The DLC is expected to be as big and ambitious as The Taken King, which was released September last year. As a result, the developer's schedule may not have room for "Destiny 2" for now.

Bungie also feels the pressure to release new post-launch content for "Destiny," especially with fans clamoring for a new DLC. This is why the focus is back on putting one out before the year ends.

It's been more than half a year since "Destiny" received additional content and publisher Activision knows that the fans are waiting to see more material released the game.

"That passion and loyalty from our fans is something that we don't take for granted," chief executive officer Eric Hirshberg said during a conference call (via Push Square) where he talked about the game hitting 30 million subscribers.

"Which is why we're working side by side with Bungie to make sure that in the future, we're able to deliver a more consistent stream of great content and drive even more engagement," he continued.

Fans won't hear official details about "Destiny2" until 2017, which is the release timeframe Activision chose for the sequel after pushing the launch back from the original September 2016 timing.

Back in 2014, it was revealed that Bungie started working on "Destiny 2." That time, it was confirmed by Activision that the game will allow the characters and progression of players to carry over the follow-up game.

For now, fans will have to be patient in order to see Bungie and Activision's vision about "Destiny" unfold in the years to come.
