'Doctor Who' season 9 spoilers, premiere date: Cast to remain unchanged, but tweaks expected

 BBC/Adrian Rogers

In season 8 of "Doctor Who," Peter Capaldi assumed the role of the new Doctor. In season 9, he will be reprising his role, but things won't be the same this time around. Apparently, season 8 didn't do well with the ratings and BBC is looking to boost those ratings in the new season.

According to media reports, the dark and adult storylines of "Doctor Who" season 8 may have been the reason for the ratings drop, for which critics are allegedly pointing their fingers at writer Steven Moffat.  Some claim the stories to be boring, while others think it's complicated. Consequently, if BBC is looking to make huge changes, then an overhaul in the writing team could be one of their options.

The Mirror quotes a source from BBC as saying, "There will be some tweaks. We are obviously keen for it to appeal to the whole family."

In line with what the source said, then the network might be eyeing to see more episodes that cater to the younger market as well as to adults, rather than plots that target just the older viewers. Some fans are suggesting bringing back monsters and showing more of the aliens.

Meanwhile, Radio Times reported that the principal photography for "Doctor Who" season 9 has already started, which just further strengthens the report that filming will indeed start this month. As for the exact premiere date, there's still no official word. Reports are pointing to an autumn 2015 premiere though.

Nevertheless, with all these changes, Jenna Coleman and Capaldi will surely be staying as they have both confirmed it. It is safe to assume that the cast will stay still, and that the major changes will take place behind the scenes, particularly in the writing and directing department.
