Ed Sheeran marriage rumors: Singer denies he secretly got married

On Jan. 20, Ed Sheeran announced his engagement to his now-fiancée, Cherry Seaborn, writing on an Instagram post that he proposed just before the new year. Recently, however, fans have speculated that Sheeran and Seaborn may have actually gotten married already, albeit in secret.

The 27-year-old singer was recently seen wearing a silver band during a performance in London, and was also photographed wearing the ring on the 2018 Brit Awards red carpet on Feb. 21.

This has led fans to speculate that the singer has secretly gotten married to Seaborn, although Sheeran was quick to dismiss the rumors as untrue.

Reporter Dan Wooton, who interviewed Sheeran on the Brit Awards red carpet for the talk show Lorraine, asked the singer if there was any truth to the speculations. Sheeran then set the record straight, saying the ring he was wearing was actually meant to commemorate his engagement, not his marriage.

"I never saw why men didn't wear engagement rings," Sheeran told Wooton, adding, "It's the same commitment either way." The singer then went on to say that Seaborn actually made the ring herself out of silver clay. "I really like it," Sheeran continued. He gave the same explanation to another reporter, this time for  Sky News. However, he was less forthcoming when he was asked exactly when he and Seaborn plan to get married, hinting that he may not even reveal the actual date.

"I don't know, but I don't know if I'll tell. But it will be a situation like this where no one knows," Sheeran answered, referring to the speculation around his wedding ring.

Sheeran and Seaborn first met as high school students in Suffolk before reuniting in 2015. The pair met again when Sheeran asked pop star Taylor Swift to invite Seaborn to her 2015 Fourth of July party, which Sheeran was also attending. Seaborn had moved to the United States to play hockey for Duke University, but later returned to the United Kingdom to be closer to Sheeran after being in a long-distance relationship with the singer.

Sheeran won the Global Success prize at the 2018 Brit Awards and performed "Supermarket Flowers," a track from his new album "Divide." Even though he was the usual favorite to win the best album award, the prize went instead to musician Stormzy for his album "Gang Signs & Prayer."
