This is only the third time this season that Nico Rosberg has beaten Hamilton to the pole, and he must make it count if he is to have any chance of clawing his way back into the drivers' championship.

Mercedes again dominated qualifying in Sochi, Russia, and Rosberg claimed his second straight pole after Hamilton put in a slower first flying lap, before making a bad mistake on his second attempt.

Hamilton has not looked his usual assured self on the Sochi track, and Rosberg has been quick to take advantage.

Third on the grid will be Williams' Valtteri Bottas, with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel back in fourth.

It has been a troubled weekend so far for the defending F1 champ, as Hamilton pulled into the pits with two minutes of qualifying still to go. The British driver ran wide at Turn 13 on his second flying lap as he tried to push things to beat his team mate Rosberg to the pole.

Rosberg was delighted with the result and may be feeling that things are starting to swing his way as the season reaches its final straight. Rosberg said, "I'm very happy. It's been a difficult weekend because we didn't get much practice but qualifying worked out really well. It felt comfortable and I got some good laps in."

Meanwhile, Hamilton has said, "Difficult weekend for everyone. Nico did a great job in his lap."

He also added that there was nothing wrong with his car, and that it was "not such a bad race" to start second on the grid. Hamilton of course won the Russian Grand Prix last year after starting second.
