With no signs of a second-generation Nexus 10 2 tablet in sight, Google is rumored to ditch the 10-inch slate in favor of an 8 inch tablet.

The purported 8 inch tablet will launch later this year, but Google has yet to confirm the news or offer any solid information on the upcoming rumored device.

Latest reported suggest that Google will target consumers with a slightly bigger screen than its popular Nexus 7 line.

The tablet, dubbed Nexus 8, is set to pack powerful specs, including a 64-bit CPU and the latest Android 4.5 software.

Latest rumors suggest that Taiwanese company HTC will manufacture Google's next tablet, slated for release on Q3 this year.

The purported Nexus 8 tablet is set to arrive this summer. Google's move to ditch the 7 inch tablet to a larger 8 inch could be part of its efforts to rival the iPad Mini, which remains a popular choice among consumers.

Google's Nexus 7 and Nexus 7 2 have proven to be popular for its simple design and high-end specs which come at a reasonable price.

Google's annual I/O Developer Conference will take place in San Francisco from June 25 to 26. The upgraded Android 4.5 operating system is expected to launch at the time, and rumors suggest the device may be unveiled at this time, with the software preinstalled.
