"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" has finally been confirmed by director James Gunn, where the director even teased a release date for the sequel to the hit Marvel movie.

The 51-year-old director recently took to Twitter to announce that the third movie of the rag-tag galactic defenders will be coming in 2020. He did not specify when in that particular year though. This means that production for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" might not take place until next year or at the soonest, late in 2018.

Website Collider has also revealed that Marvel and Disney have three release dates staked out in 2020 for Marvel superheroes. These are May 1, 2020, Aug. 7, 2020, Nov. 6, 2020. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" could be released in any three of these slots, though its predecessor, "Vol. 2," was actually released on May last year. This means that the third one might well follow suit and take the May premiere slot. However, right now, these are just speculations and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Sadly, fans of the title who are expecting the movie to be prolonged beyond the third one will be disappointed, since Gunn has also stated that it will conclude the story of the galaxy's favorite misfits. Still, that does not mean reboots are not possible, as the title can still continue, albeit with a different lineup of characters and with a different director.

The release year of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" could also be an indication that most, if not all of the members, will survive "Avengers: Infinity War." This is set to be the ultimate Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) showdown and will include all Marvel movie superheroes to date, including the Guardians. This also means that by the third movie, the Guardians will also be a part of a new MCU, along with a new team of Avengers, depending on who will die or live in "Infinity War."
