'Homeland' season 6 premiere: Is it the end for Carrie and Quinn?

"Homeland" will return for season 6 to reveal what happened to Quinn. Showtime

Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) may have survived his harrowing ordeal in season 5 and come back good as new when the hit Showtime series "Homeland" returns for its sixth installment.

During the finale, viewers were left with a massive cliffhanger on whether the agent is alive or dead. Quinn's life hung in a balance when he was exposed to poisonous gas by the terrorists in Berlin. Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) was able to find him just before he succumbed to its debilitating effect. The doctors were not positive he would survive, especially when she and Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) forced him to wake up to ask where the jihadists were planning to release the toxic gas.

Quinn suffered from a massive brain hemorrhage. The final scenes showed Carrie sitting by his hospital bed, and it appeared to be the end for him. Before that, though, Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) gave Carrie a letter from Quinn in which he confessed his love to her. It was also revealed that he was the one who sent her the note that saved her life. As Carrie lovingly stared at his face for a final goodbye, a ray of light shone into the room.

Soon after the Sunday night conclusion, the official Twitter account of the series launched the hashtag "#PrayForQuinn," giving fans hope that Quinn may have survived his biggest test. They have taken to guessing the manner by which he would return for season 6, all centered on the mysterious light that was shown in the final scene. Some believe it was all a dream for Carrie, while others think it was Quinn's ghost watching over her.

Whatever speculations viewers have, showrunner Alex Gansa refused to comment. He has previously told Entertainment Weekly that there would be no post-finale interviews for this year.

Showtime has already announced that there will be a Season 6 for "Homeland." The new episodes are expected to premiere in 2016, with the official release date yet to be revealed.
