Brandon Weeden's time as a starter might be up as the Houston Texans are looking to start quarterback Brian Hoyer once he is cleared from the National Football League's (NFL) concussion protocol program.
According to reports, Hoyer is already in the last stage of the concussion protocol and might be starting this Sunday when Houston takes on the Jacksonville Jaguars to close the 2015 regular season.
"He has progressed well through the protocol and he's basically in the last phase of that evaluation, and so I'll know more on Wednesday," Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said, according to the Associated Press.
O'Brien also stated that Weeden have done a good job in their past two games, one of those he started with both ending in wins, but if Hoyer is cleared he will again be the starter.
The Texans are aiming to clinch the American Football Conference (AFC) South title, which could have been theirs only if the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Denver Broncos last Monday.
Despite the playoffs nearing, O'Brien is not looking to rest players. This means that Hoyer, if he returns, will be seeing action for the first time since suffering his second concussion this season.
In a total of 10 games (eight starts) played this 2015 regular season, Hoyer has 199 completions for 2,357 yards and 18 touchdowns, also throwing six interceptions.
It has been an up and down season for the 30-year-old as he was the initial starter to begin the Texans' new campaign, lost the job to Ryan Mallett after their opening game, but got it back in the middle of the season.
Hoyer has bounced back this year and is playing better than when he did last season for the Cleveland Browns, where he was the team's main passer before losing the job late in the season to the controversial Johnny Manziel.
