New leaked images of the iPad 5 are the first to show the next-generation device in up close detail.

The images come courtesy of Sonny Dickson, who also made impressive leaks of the iPhone 5S prior to its release.

In the latest set of images, the iPad 5 appears to be much lighter and thinner than the current device and in the color of Space Grey.

Sonny Dickson's images are much better quality than what we've seen in previous image and video leaks of the iPad 5.

AllThingsD is reporting that Apple will hold an event to announce the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 on October 22, a little later than expected.

Sources didn't confirm where the event would take place but AllThingsD's John Paczkowski said his understanding was that it would not be at the California Theatre in San Jose where the iPad Mini was unveiled in 2012.

The new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks are also expected to get a mention at the invitation-only event.

If the date's right, it'll fall on the same date Nokia's Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi, when the company is expected to unveil the Lumia 525, the Lumia 1520 phablet, and the Lumia 2520 Windows RT tablet.

In addition to a better camera, the iPad 5 is expected to run on the new 64-bit A7 chip and there is a rumor floating around that it will come with a fingerprint scanner like the iPhone 5S.

In terms of design, it'll have an iPad Mini-like bezel.

The iPad Mini 2 meanwhile is expected to come with a retina display and incorporate the A7.
