iPad Mini 2 release date, specs: Apple going for October 15? Compact iPad 5 shown in new VIDEO

As the dust settles on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, which will be shipping to the first customers within days, it looks like Apple could be gearing up for another big media event in a few weeks, this time in connection with its next generation of iPads.

That's according to French blog MacGeneration, which reports that a "special event" is being primed at the Cupertino, California, site for 15 October.

That would put the event just a day before the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat are rumoured to launch.

It could be the so-called iPad 5 or the iPad Mini 2, or both.  The report doesn't specify.

It wouldn't be the first time Apple has unveiled two iPad models at the same time.  It did this last year, when the iPad 4 and iPad mini debuted late October, not long after the iPhone 5 was introduced to the world.

So what can we expect from the next generation of iPads?

Well, both are expected to have retina display and KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculated both would come with a new A7X chip.  They may also have the same Touch ID sensor introduced in the iPhone 5S.

There is also speculation that the two models will take a leaf out of the books of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in colour and casing, with the possibility of a gold colour option on the iPad 5 and a polycarbonate plastic shell for the iPad Mini 2, similar to the iPhone 5C.

A new video from tldtoday on YouTube claims to show a sneak peak of the new iPad 5.  The video claims to show the iPad 4 next to a much more compact iPad 5, supporting rumours that the next iPad is going to be much thinner and lighter.
