Los Angeles Lakers news: Teammates see bright future for D'Angelo Russel

There a lot of expectations from D'Angelo Russell and so far, not too many have been able to appreciate him. Well, much of that is because of his inconsistencies and the fact that he hasn't been given extensive minutes, particularly in the fourth quarter when winning time comes.

But from the looks of it, all of this is turning out to be too heavy for a 19-year-old player to handle. Apparently, such comes with the territory since he had been branded as one of the best guards in the 2015 NBA Draft and was the reason why the Lakers chose him with the second overall pick.

The knee-jerk reaction of hoop nuts is that highly touted rookies make an impact right on their very first game. But then again, there are external factors such as the team you are playing with, the teammates you have and, of course, how you play when you are given the chance to perform.

With the Lakers, a franchise rich in winning tradition and best players in the NBA, Russell is obviously someone who has a lot of road to cover. He may not admit it but the pressure is there.

However there is the age factor. At 19, not too many players have succeeded in their first year. That list includes a player who could be retiring on the same team, Kobe Bryant.

Bryant was just 18 when he was drafted by the Lakers and he played in the shadows of other players like Eddie Jones. His first year wasn't spectacular but given time he proved what he could do.

Such is the same with Russell. He may not be among the best right now but his approach toward it is a positive sign. As Kobe advised, he should try to study and analyze what is going on in the game for his team, digest and adjust when he gets called to go in.

He may not be utilized now but such is understandable since he may eventually flop. He will get the call at some point and from the looks of it, it takes just one breakout game before he settles in.

This is not something new since most players have gone through it. All Russell needs is time and whether it be this season or next, he will get the chance to show what he can really do for his ball club.
