MediaTek MT8173 scores impressive 50,000-plus in Antutu benchmarking tests

 ARM’s official website

MT8173, which is a chipset belonging to MediaTek with intent to be incorporated in high performance tablets has had its first benchmarking report revealed, courtesy of Antutu. According to Fudzilla, the high performing SoC is able to pull off 50,000 points from the benchmarking application, which is really impressive considering the fact that the chipset features a quad-core processor combination in comparison to Snapdragon 810 and Exynos 7420, which both feature octa-core processors.

MT8173 is running two Cortex-A72 cores coupled with two Cortex-A53 cores in ARM's big.LITTLE architecture. Cortex-A72 delivers much more processing power and thermal efficiency compared to Cortex-A57 and tackles the more intensive tasks in contrast to Cortex-A53.

The two cores belonging to Cortex-A72 were running at a clock speed of 2.0 GHz, while the lesser performing cores were functioning at 1.6 GHz and are designed to take care of less taxing tasks in order to give more breathing room to Cortex-A72.

Seeing as how a quad-core running mobile chipset is able to project a score of 50,000+ in Antutu, MediaTek's Helio X20 would be able to receive a much larger score, given the fact that the processor running inside the chipset features 10 cores; two belonging to Cortex-A72 (running at a clock speed of 2.5 GHz), while the remaining eight belong to Cortex-A53.

Unfortunately, there were no temperature results revealed about the benchmarked chipset, even though it can immediately be assumed that the pairing of Cortex-A72 and Cortex-A53 will run much cooler as compared to the pairing of Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53.

So far, there is no word on when the tablets sporting MT8173 will be released in the market. MediaTek will also be looking to incorporate the aforementioned mobile SoC in upcoming Chromebooks, which will feature a killer price tag.

These Chromebooks are expected to be released either later this year, or during Q1, 2016.
