If Jesus was a voter in the US presidential elections, he would likely vote for Bernie Sanders, according to astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson in a tweet, drawing various reactions from social media users.

"Who would Jesus vote for? To him walls, wealth, & torture are non-starters, so probably the Jewish New Yorker from Vermont," he tweeted.

Some Twitter users like Gino the Beagle begged to differ, saying that Christ would likely go for Trump because of his strong stance against terrorists preying on Christians, especially in the Middle East.

There are also those who agreed with Tyson, and supported Sanders' position on non violence.

Many seemed to echo the astrophysicist's views as the post has been retweeted over 31,000 times and has been liked by more than 44,000 Twitter users.

Tyson was not the only personality who drew comparisons between Sanders' position and the teachings of Jesus.

Citing his socialist position on every person being on an equal footing, political analyst Hrafnkell Haraldsson claimed in his column on the liberal Politics USA site that many Americans misinterpret Sanders' statements even though upon closer inspection, Sanders would simply be doing as Jesus would have done.

"None of these people, who purport to champion Jesus' teachings, get what Bernie Sanders is saying, even though he is coming from that same place Jesus came from, that same place Pope Francis is coming from now. They don't get Sanders, and because they don't get Sanders, they don't get Jesus," he said.

Sanders lost out to Hillary Clinton on Super Tuesday as voters trooped to the polls in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Wyoming and American Samoa, reported CNN.

Clinton won seven of the states while Sanders won in four states - Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Vermont.
