Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers will look to break the tie they are currently in and move past the other in the Western Conference as they play on Wednesday at Providence Park.

Both clubs are tied in the standings with 40 points, enough to be on the fifth and sixth spot in the West, two points ahead of the San Jose Earthquakes which is seventh in the conference with 38 points.

Sporting KC lost their past three matches in Major League Soccer (MLS) bowing to the Earthquakes (5–0), Colombus Crew SC (3–2), and the Colorado Rapids (2–1).

Before the current losing slide, the Wizards have won two consecutive matches facing Toronto FC (3–1) and Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4–3).

More than anything, Sporting KC would want to solidify their hold of a playoff spot and a victory over Portland will help them in achieving that goal.

A win will give the Wizards 43 points and will move them past Seattle Sounders FC who are sitting on the fourth spot in the West with 41 points.

Meanwhile, the Timbers would also want to accomplish the same to break the tie and improve their standings.

Portland lost to Rave Green 2–1 in their previous MLS outing and that ended a four-match unbeaten streak which included two wins and two draws.

The wins were over the Chicago Fire (1–0) and Real Salt Lake (1–0) while the draws were against San Jose (0–0) and the Houston Dynamo (2–2)

A win over Sporting KC would do the same for the Timbers as they will take the fourth spot in the West with 43 points.

In Sporting KC and Portland's first meeting this season which was last March, the match ended in a scoreless draw.

If the same result happens this Wednesday, a triple tie would form as the Wizards and Timbers will be getting a point each which will level them with Rave Green at 41 points.

The match between Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 10:30 p.m. EST. To watch via live stream, click here.
