Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Aaron (Elliot Fletcher) officially became a couple in the recently concluded fourth season of "The Fosters." Yet their relationship could be in question when the family drama series returns for season 5.

The couple's relationship was another major breakthrough for the TV series, since this was the very first transgender romance that was featured on national TV.

In an interview with TV Guide, executive producers Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige revealed that the new couple already had a very strong connection from the very start. But they have to work harder to make sure that their new bond from being friends to lovers will last.

"We'll see them elate in that move, question how to build and support their relationship and each other and just connect in the way that two people this in-sync can connect," the executive producers stated.

The new direction of Callie and Aaron's relationship also means that fans will see less of Callie's former boyfriend AJ (Tom Williamson) in season 5, but he will still be around in the upcoming season.

"We'll see AJ again. Now that he's not in a romantic relationship with Callie, we will see less of him for sure, but he's still present in our world and there's still stuff to be resolved and questions that we find quite interesting for him," Paige said in a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly.

However, her love life will be the least of Callie's problems when "The Fosters" return for season 5 since her life is still on the line after she agreed to help teenage prostitute Diamond (Hope Olaide Wilson) get out of her situation during the finale of season 4.

However, according to Paige, it was not the first time that Callie had been in a tricky situation. He also described her as an intelligent young woman and she could possibly do anything that she can to get out of it.

Freeform is slated to air the fifth season premiere of "The Fosters" on Tuesday, July 11, at 8 p.m. EDT on Freeform.
