After airing its mid-season finale in early September, it has been announced that the Freeform family drama, "The Fosters," will be returning for the second half of its fifth season run on January 2018.

The fifth season will continue with a new episode on Jan. 9, and it will finally bring some answers to the major cliffhanger where the last episode back in September left off.

Fans of the show would remember that during the last episode titled "Prom," Callie (Maia Mitchell) and AJ (Tom Williamson) managed to get Ximena (Lisseth Chavez) inside a church where she sought sanctuary from people working to deport her after she participated in a school protest.

The three locked themselves inside the church and were determined to wait until Ximena could safely get out and get back to her family.

The next episode, which is still untitled, will be picking up right where the last episode ended, and will probably show how the teens plan their escape.

In the past, "The Fosters" has always made it a point to tackle "important social issues such as LGBTQ rights and adoption rights." This latest predicament with Ximena highlights issues with immigration rights, and it seems the series will remain vigilant in depicting relevant social topics.

"We will continue to tell those important stories this season for those who too often are not heard," said the show's executive producer, Joanna Johnson.

Meanwhile, fans are also excited to know what is in store for Callie and Brandon (David Lambert) as far as their relationship is concerned. The two have garnered quite a number of followers who are looking to see a romantic relationship between then develop.

However, there are also many detractors of the possible on-screen couple because of the fact that Callie has been adopted by Brandon's parents, which makes them adoptive siblings. The show will definitely look to address this argument when it returns next year.
