Skydance CEO David Ellison has confirmed the news that Top Gun will have a sequel.

During the press conference for "Terminator Genisys" held last week in Berlin, Ellison revealed details about the sequel to the 80's blockbuster hit.

To start off, the producer revealed that Maverick will be back. "There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no 'Top Gun' without Maverick — and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Ellison told reporters via Collider.

Maverick may come back, but it seems that the sequel will have a different plot compared with the original that featured dogfighting pilots. It was also revealed that Top Gun 2 would be set in a modern world and would focus on the use of drones for military activities.

As for Maverick, Ellison also confirmed that Tom Cruise will reappear in the sequel.

Initially, it was reported that Cruise would only be playing a minor role. However, it appears that he will indeed have a starring role.

In addition to the drones plot and reappearance of Cruise, Ellison also said the sequel would be in 3D and IMAX, with awesome special effects that should suit Cruise.

"As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100% going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically," Ellison said.

News of reviving Top Gun first surfaced five years ago, when original director Tony Scott said it himself—when he was still alive--that a sequel would be on its way.

At that time, Scott said he had never planned to touch the world of fighting jets with Maverick, but a meeting with a young pilot working with unmanned drones inspired him to reconsider.

According to Scott, he was fascinated by the world of drones, which was far different from the original Top Gun world. "I don't want to do a remake. I don't want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie," he said in a report from HitFlix.
