"Vikings" Season 3 finished on a very high note, both for the fans and Ragnar Lothbrok himself. Ragnar has infiltrated Paris, but he did this through faking his death. However, Ragnar remains to be sick and his brother Rollo continues to defend the French. What is to happen in Season 4?

Showrunner Michael Hirst chatted with The Hollywood Reporters to explain some of the things that went down in the Season 3 finale, as well as things to come in Season 4.

For one, when Ragnar was inside the coffin, Floki and Rollo confessed their true feelings and thoughts to Ragnar, one that surprised him. Hirst said that these confessions will be carried over to Season 4.

Aslaug will also be an important part of Season 4. In the next season, Aslaug will reconnect with her roots, which in turn, will make her character turn darker. Nonetheless, Hirst said that this change will be good for Aslaug as she will find purpose and new strength. Also, Aslaug will enjoy the power without Ragnar around.

Meanwhile, it can be recalled that Hirst said that he can see "Vikings" without Ragnar. Now that Ragnar is sick, does this hint on his coming death? This is what Hirst had to say:

"It's very important to note that he's not only sick; he's hovering between life and death. So that impacts hugely on the beginning of season four, which we're working on now. It's a big story point. It's very important that Ragnar is weakened, ill and hovering between life and death when we come back for season four."

Hirst didn't exactly answer if Ragnar will die or not, but if he does, this is what he thinks will happen:

"By that stage, his sons will be young, hot guys and hopefully the audience will already be engaged with them and want to follow them. They'll be different; each son has a different destiny and they'll be different sort of characters. But they'll be very powerful figures in their own rights," Hirst explained.

Season 4 will pick up a couple of years after the Season 3 finale. "Vikings" Season 4 will air in 2016.
