Ford's midsize pickup truck has finally returned. The 2019 Ranger was introduced at the Detroit Motor Show this week with more available features and technologies spread across several configurations.

Though the Ford Ranger has continuously been available internationally, this year marks the return of the midsize pickup truck in the United States since it was discontinued in 2011. For its reintroduction to the market, the American automaker made sure that the 2019 Ranger's design, chassis and powertrain were tailored to the needs of U.S. customers.

"The all-new Ranger is designed for today's midsize truck buyer, delivering even more utility, capability and technology for those who blend city living with more off-the-grid adventures on weekends," said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president of Product Development and Purchasing.

The 2019 Ranger still stays true to the popular nameplate's DNA, featuring a high-strength steel frame backbone as well as frame-mounted steel front and rear bumpers. Design-wise, the all-new midsize pickup truck has a muscular and athletic appearance. It has a high beltline, short overhangs and a raked front fascia.

Ford's upcoming truck is powered by a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The automaker has not released performance numbers yet but said that the 2019 Ranger will be able to tow campers, ATVs, watercrafts and other heavy-duty equipment with ease.

Customers will be able to choose from different configurations for the 2019 Ranger depending on their needs and preferences. There are two available body styles: SuperCab or SuperCrew. Both will be available in three trims — XL, XLT and Lariat — which are all available with either a Chrome or Sport appearance.

Moreover, the midsize pickup truck will be available with a rear-wheel drive or an all-wheel-drive system.

For those who want more options, Ford's FX Off-Road packages will add protective skid plates, upgraded tires, off-road-tuned shocks and suspension, the Terrain Management System and Trail Control.

Available technologies include an 8-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility, a premium audio system and 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity for up to 10 devices.

Depending on the trim, the 2019 Ranger will be available with a suite of driver-assistive technologies including Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Reverse Sensing System, Blind Spot Information System, Pedestrian Detection and Adaptive Cruise Control.

The 2019 Ford Ranger is scheduled to begin production later this year.
