Mercedes-Benz continues to preview the 2019 G-Class ahead of its debut at the 88th North American International Auto Show in two weeks. The German automaker recently released teasers that showcase the upcoming luxury SUV's timeless appeal and off-road capability.

According to the Mercedes, the goal for the 2019 G-Class was to make it even more effective off-road. During the development stage, the next-generation luxury SUV was put to the test at Schöckl — a 1,445-meter mountain in Styria, Austria — where it had to conquer a 5.6 km route with gradients of up to 60 percent and lateral inclinations of up to 40 percent.

After enduring over 2,000 km, the new G-Class is said to have mastered the route with more control and comfort.

The upcoming luxury SUV was able to achieve a high level of off-road capability thanks to a standard ladder-type frame, three 100-percent differential locks and a low range ratio. It is also equipped with an independent suspension with a double wishbone front axle and a rigid rear axle. Engineers were tasked to optimize the suspension setup to achieve higher ground clearance. The inclusion of a strut brace also added stiffness to the body.

Mercedes also revealed that "G-Mode" will be activated once the three differential locks and low range ratio have been engaged. This mode, which is independent of the selected drive program, adjusts damping, steering, throttle and transmission to ensure maximum off-road capability. G-Mode is able to handle major bumps and extreme terrain without the driver having to exert much effort on the steering wheel.

Other notable features include a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission that has been specifically designed to handle off-road conditions as well as a 360-degree camera, reversing camera and three other cameras that provide a Full HD view of the G-Class' surroundings via the infotainment system.

Meanwhile, Mercedes has confirmed via a teaser that the 2019 G-Class will make its world premiere at NAIAS 2018 in Detroit on Monday, Jan. 15. The accompanying video highlights the G-Class nameplate's expansive history and timeless appeal.
