Sega has officially announced on Twitter that the Sega Genesis/Master System classic "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" will be released for the Nintendo 3DS eShop on Oct. 8. "3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2" will be remastered to take advantage of the handheld's 3D capabilities.

As stated by Nintendo Life, it is likely that the Oct. 8 release will be for both the North America and Europe versions. The game is already available in Japan, therefore gamers with a Japanese Nintendo account can already download the game on their unit.

The original game, released in 1992, became the second best selling game on the Sega Genesis with over 6 million copies sold, putting it right behind the first "Sonic the Hedgehog" game. As a sequel, it also introduced new characters such as Sonic's sidekick Miles "Tails" Prower and a different kind of special stage to collect Chaos Emeralds.

Friends who both have a copy of the game can play the game in the two-player mode. One will control Sonic, the main character, and the other can take control of Tails, who is invincible and also has the ability to fly. There is also a two-player racing mode where each player attempts to get to a stage's goal before the other.

What is not yet clear, however, is if the additional features from "Sonic & Knuckles" will also be implemented in the 3D release. "Sonic & Knuckles" utilized a special Genesis cartridge that allowed gamers to insert "Sonic 2" into it, allowing them to play an altered version where they could now control Knuckles the Echidna.

The game will also feature the ability to save at any time, which is crucial for portable gaming.

No price tag has yet been announced, but given that "3D Sonic the Hedgehog" and "3D Gunstar Heroes" were priced at $5.99, it is likely that "3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2" will be given the same price tag.
