Android Marshmallow update: Beta heads out to AT&T Priv users

The new beta version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow is already available on BalackBerry Priv units under AT&T.

In an announcement posted on the CrackBerry forums, invitation emails have gone out to AT&T subscribers with BlackBerry Priv units. However, the update notification is only for the owners who have registered with the beta tests on the BlackBerry beta Zone.

The email reads, "Beta Update #6 Available for AT&T Testers - Today we're welcoming hundreds of AT&T-variant PRIV owners to the community as they receive their first 6.0 beta build (which we're calling Beta #6). It's a big day! The update is only available to their devices."

Meanwhile, although the update is for a carrier-locked device, AT&T also implied that a manual check via the Settings and About Phone tabs may not be possible. The message continued, "The build isn't too different from Beta #4/5, so please feel free to hop into the forum and help/comment. If you have an AT&T-variant PRIV and don't see the beta update, just visit the Feedback Form on the community landing page and send me a note. We'll look into it."

Normally, though users have not received an OTA notification for the update yet, a major Android version update can be manually downloaded through the device's settings tab.

The adoption of the Android Marshmallow for the BlackBerry Priv is the latest in carrier-locked devices getting the current-gen platform version. Just recently, it was revealed that the BlackBerry Priv under another major U.S. carrier, T-Mobile, has also started receiving Android Marshmallow 6.0.

The new additions to the Android Marshmallow update now bring the total of Android-run devices to the current-gen version to 10 percent of all Marshmallow-compatible iterations. This is still a meager quantity considering that Google is already doing its final touches on the next platform version, Android N.
