The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams has welcomed the election of 78-year old German cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the new Pope.

In an official statement he said: "He is a theologian of great stature, who has written some profound reflections on the nature of God and the church."

Some religious leaders have considered Ratzinger too conservative when it comes to issues on abortion, contraception, homosexuality and women priests. However, the choice of the name Benedict XVI links to First World War’s Pope Benedict XV, who was considered to be moderate and was highly respected.

The Archbishop of Canterbury commented: "His choice of the name Benedict suggests that he wants to connect his vision of the Church to the monastic spirit of service and contemplation."

Dr. Williams also expressed his hope of next collaborating with the new Pope: "His election is also of great significance to Christians everywhere. I look forward to meeting him and working together to build on the legacy of his predecessor, as we seek to promote shared understanding between our churches in the service of the Gospel and the goal of Christian unity."

"He will be much in our prayers in the days and weeks ahead."

It has also been reported that Queen Elizabeth, the titular head, known as the Supreme Governor, of the Church of England, and her husband, Prince Philip, have sent a private message to the Vatican conveying their "best wishes" to Pope Benedict.
