Argentina will play the Netherlands on Wednesday in the World Cup 2014 semi-finals. Whoever emerges victorious from today's match will meet Germany in the final following their 7-1 win over Brazil in Tuesday's game.

The World Cup history between these two teams is breathtaking, and has produced some of the best drama in the competition's history.

Many will remember Holland's display of "total football" when they destroyed Argentina 4-0 in 1974, which was the first time the sides met. However, Argentina of course gained revenge in a thrilling game at home just four years later.

Others will remember Dennis Bergkamp showing amazing skills when the teams played one another in 1998.

However, it has not been all glamor between the pair, and in their last meeting against one another in 2006, the teams played our a dire 0-0 draw.

Argentina have only ever defeated the Dutch once before – when the won in the 1978 World Cup Final. They have been unable to record another win though in their other seven meetings – drawing three times, with the Dutch claiming the win four times.

However, Argentina have never lost a World Cup semi-final, and have won their previous four semi-final encounters.

If they are to maintain that record today then Lionel Messi will be a massive player for them. He has created 19 goalscoring chances in this World Cup, the most of any player, and if he can continue that same form then Argentina will be confident they can claim a final spot.
