'Arrow' season 5 cast, spoilers news: Stephen Amell teases new villain

The CW

"Arrow" season 3 and season 4 have seen a dip in rating in comparison to the first two seasons of the show but season 5 is being marketed as a return to form for the series. According to star Stephen Amell, who plays Oliver Queen aka the Green Arrow, this will translate as well to the villain.

Speaking to Variety, Amell revealed that the villain will be a far cry in comparison to Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), the main antagonist of season 4, and the season 3 villain Ra's al Ghul (Matthew Nable). As a matter of fact, the villain would be similar in design to the Green Arrow or the season 1 villain. Malcom Merlyn (John Barrowman).

"I've heard that our big bad, our villain, is something that you can really only do once you're in the fifth, sixth or seventh season of a TV show," Amell explained in the interview. "As far as I know, they don't have superpowers. I'll tell you that."

There are rumors that the season 5 villain may be related to Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke (Manu Bennett) or may be connected to the Russian mob given that season 5 is expected to reveal how Oliver Queen became a captain in the Russian mob and learned to speak fluent Russian.

The actor also revealed that season 5 would be going back to the more grounded style of season 1 now that the show could focus solely on "Arrow." Season 2 was reportedly building up "The Flash" and season 3 had to work in a few crossovers to build up "Legends of Tomorrow."

Amell also teased that season 5 may have a special crossover that would involve "The Flash," "Legends of Tomorrow," and "Supergirl," which just moved to the CW network from its original slot on CBS.

No official announcements have been made yet regarding who the villain is or who has been cast to portray him or her.
