It was previously reported that "Attack on Titan" season 2 may be arriving this year, following the premiere of "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress." However, a new report from Crunchyroll confirms that this will no longer be the case. Instead, the series will debut in early 2017.

According to the report, Spanish distributor SelectaVision and the anime's publisher, Kodansha, have confirmed that the series will no longer be hitting its targeted 2016 release. No explainations were given regarding the sudden delay, although fans speculate it may be due to "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress" taking precedence over "Attack on Titan."

The second season is now looking at a January 2017 release; however, this is for the Spanish release. It is speculated that a North American release may come a few weeks or even a few months after, allowing the North American studios to complete the English dub. 

Fans waiting for the next season of "Attack on Titan" will have a few related media to stay preoccupied for the time being. As stated in a report from the Latin Times, there is a brand new "Attack on Titan" video game coming out this year and a prequel OVA titled "Attack on Titan: No Regrets" will be released as well.

It was previously believed by fans that the anime was being delayed in order to allow the manga to finish several more story arcs. This would guarantee the anime does not catch up to the story of the source material and to avoid forcing the anime developers to craft their own story and ending that may be different from the manga.

According to the report, season 2 will tackle several key plot points such as the royal family's ability to transform into Titans, similar to Eren, and the origins of the Titans themselves. Previews for the second season have also teased Titans residing within the walls and that there will be a revolution against the royal family.
