'Empire' season 3 spoilers: guest appearance from Phylicia Rashad to in upcoming season

Fox

The roster of guest stars appearing in "Empire" season 3 continues to grow as "Cosby Show" alum Phylicia Rashad has been cast to portray Diana Dubois. According to a report from Variety, the Dubois is one of the oldest and also most respected African-American families in New York, hinting at some power play regarding her character.

The report contnues to point out Diana is the mother of Taye Diggs' character, Angelo Dubois. Angelo is stated to be an ambitious city councilman and is Diana's only son. According to the report, Diana has sights on a higher office for Angelo and will stop at nothing to groom him and get him on top of the corporate and political ladder.

It is further stated that her interactions with Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) Lyon, as well as the rest of the Lyon family, will showcase how class divides exist even from within the black community. Previous seasons have showcased that being a minority doesn't mean people of the same race will always stick together and Diana Dubois will be the epitome of this issue.

TVLine also reports that Angelo may have his eyes to become the next love interest for Cookie's alter ego and this may affect his relationship with Diana.

Rashad will be joining other high-profile guest stars this season such as Mariah Carey, French Montana, Sierra McClain and Birdman. It is possible that more guest stars will be added to the show given its nature of featuring musical talents and producers in the music industry, allowing celebrities to appear in quick cameos.

Phylicia Rashad is most famous for her work on "Cosby Show" where she portrayed Claire Huxtable, the on-screen wife of Bill Cosby. She has also appeared on "Do No Harm," "Psych" and "Steel Magnolias."

"Empire" season 3 premieres Sept. 21.
