'Fallout 4' SPECIAL and VATS change for new Wastelands

Bethesda Softworks

With the release of "Fallout 4," most hardcore gamers anticipate a return to the Wastelands. However, the new title is so different from its predecessors that both veterans to the series and first-timers need to prepare themselves before starting with "Fallout 4."

According to industry observers who have already had a taste of what "Fallout 4" looks, feels, and plays like, one of the things that make the new title unique among the "Fallout" titles is that this is the most massive one yet. However, a novelty feature of the franchise is also important in the new title, that of the SPECIAL system.

A first impression by The Verge places emphasis on the more streamlined approach to leveling up the skills tree. SPECIAL – the Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck – skills of the player depend on where the gamer unlocks the skills under a specific skill tree. For example, to become better at lock picking, players must spend points on the skill itself after unlocking the Lockpick skill by having at least four points for both the Perception and Intelligence base stats.

Polygon, meanwhile, emphasized the change in the VATS, the targeting system for all "Fallout" titles. Instead of freezing time immediately, the new VATS mainly slows down time, posing more direct challenge for players.

However, as with the previous titles, the premise for "Fallout 4" remains the same. Players are the survivors of a post-apocalyptic world, this time centered on an alternate Commonwealth featuring Boston, Massachusetts. Gamers will need to manage a Vault, and juggle scavenging, trading through barter, and building up both offense and defense of the Vault, all at the same time.

"Fallout 4" has been preloaded for gamers who have purchased pre-orders, while the global release is set today, Nov. 10 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
