"Fear the Walking Dead" premieres this Sunday, Aug. 23, and Robert Kirkman, creator of "The Walking Dead" comic books and executive producer for both the main series and this new spin-off explained in a video that the zombies in the show will be significantly different. 

"We're going to see zombies unlike we've ever seen before," Kirkman explains in the promotional video.

This was later echoed by showrunner Dave Erickson who stated the show, particularly its start, was "an opportunity to look at certain elements of the show and of the comic that he may not have explored as much as he wanted." 

Given that "Fear the Walking Dead" starts at the very beginning of the zombie apocalypse, the zombies in the first season will not be as rotten as those seen in the latest seasons of "The Walking Dead." Screen shots of the zombies in the premiere episode look even less decomposed than those in season 1 of the flagship series. 

It was previously explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the whole of season 1 of the spin-off will take place in the period prior to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) waking up from his coma in "The Walking Dead." This will explain why the zombies look different as they haven't had the time to decompose or become "stuck" with trees and other objects. 

However, the promotional video does clarify that season 1 of "Fear the Walking Dead" will not cross over with the main series, and it will not explain how or why the zombie apocalypse occurred in the first place, nor about finding a cure. 

In the report, Erickson explains that the show will not showcase the origin of the epidemic but will tackle how the epidemic slowly destroys the world.
