'Game of Thrones' season 6 plot spoilers: Jon Snow survives

Jon Snow during the Game of Thrones season 5 finaleHBO

"Game of Thrones" season 5 ended with Night's Watch Lord Commander Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) betrayed and stabbed, with no confirmation if he died or survived. The books by George R.R. Martin ended on the same note, and fans of both the novels and show continue to speculate whether or not he will return. New information, however, suggests he may come back.

According to Watchers on the Wall, Harrington has been spotted on set filming scenes set in North Westeros. The actor was reportedly sighted earlier at an airport in Belfast, suggesting he would shoot some scenes there. At the time, however, it was speculated he may only be doing flashback sequences or simply visiting friends on set.

The recent report now suggests that Jon Snow is alive and will participate in a big set piece that may involve fighting the Boltons, wildlings and other forces up in the north. According to a report from Cinema Blend, it is likely that the scenes shot for this set piece would be for season 6's ninth episode.

A previous interview with Harrington by Entertainment Weekly seemed to indicate that Jon Snow was going to stay dead and this answer was also even given by the showrunners to President Obama himself, but it doesn't mean that the character won't be reborn as a new character entirely.

Many rumors and theories suggest that the Lady Melissandre (Carice van Houten) would bring him to life, essentially turning him into Azor Ahainor, the Prince that Was Promised. As "The Winds of Winter" has not yet been published, there are no source materials at this point to confirm or deny if this theory would actually play out.

There are also theories of Jon Snow not being Eddard Stark's (Sean Bean) son but that of his sister Lyanna and Rhaegar Targaryen, essentially making him a Targaryen with the same powers as Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).

"Game of Thrones" season 6 premieres in 2016.
