'Game of Thrones' season 8 spoilers, plot news: Aftermath of Winterfell battle hints at major casualties

Winterfell is under attack and there are likely many casualties. Is it because of the Night King's army or Cersei's?HBO

Things are not looking good for the Starks, if the latest "Game of Thrones" set photos are anything to go by. The previous ones suggested there will be a massive battle at Winterfell and as expected, it looks like there is going to be a lot of destruction and death afterward.

In the new photos taken from the show's Winterfell set at Moneyglass, Northern Ireland, the aftermath of the battle can be seen with something scattered across the snow-covered surrounding fields. Twitter user GotLikeLocations, who uploaded the images, said with the quality of the photos, it is unclear what exactly those lying on the lawn are but their best guess would be "corpses."

Also spotted on the scene are four figures standing around a body, with one of them seemingly holding a dagger. Again, there is no telling what this means. As Winter Is Coming noted, it could be as harmless as the crew staging the scene and extras mulling around after filming the fight. If not, though, it could very well be fallen comrades or Wights rising from the dead.

Even the identity of the attackers –whether it is the Night King's army or Cersei's (Lena Heady) –is guesswork right now. One thing is clear though: the Stark ancestral castle is being attacked big time and such scenes, more often than not, come with major casualties in the show. So, it should not come as a surprise if the black spots in the photos are indeed dead bodies.

"Game of Thrones" is currently in the midst of filming the final season. According to Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in the HBO series, production is not expected to wrap until this summer.  The network has yet to give an exact date for its premiere, although it has already been confirmed to hit the small screens sometime in 2019.
