Singer and actress Demi Lovato has been added to the voice cast of "Get Smurfy," the upcoming reboot film of "The Smurfs." For the new film, she will be voicing the character Smurfette, previously portrayed by Katy Perry who did the voice work for "The Smurfs" and "The Smurfs 2."

Lovato will be joined by the likes of Mandy Patinkin and Rainn Wilson. Patinkin will be handling the voice over work for Papa Smurf while Wilson has been added to voice the evil wizard Gargamel. Papa Smurf was previously voiced by Jonathan Winters while Gargamel was played by Hank Azaria as a live action character.

"We have gathered a group of filmmakers and artists who have grown up with these loveable characters, and "Get Smurfy" will be imbued with the same spirit of adventure that first made all of us lifelong fans of these little blue guys... and girl," explains Kristine Belson, the President of Sony Pictures Animation, in a report by Variety.

According to the report, "Get Smurfy" will be an origin story and will focus on Smurfette and the rest of the Smurfs journeying through the Enchanted Forest during their search for the mythical Smurf Village. The story will also answer several questions about the franchise, such as why there is only one female Smurf character in the whole series.

"Get Smurfy" will ditch the mixture of live-action and CGI and will instead be a pure CGI animation film. According to the report, this decision was to reinvigorate and pay tribute to the original cartoon style popularized by "Smurfs" creator Peyo Culliford.

"I hope it will delight not only fans but audiences worldwide," explained executive producer Jordan Kerner. "We couldn't be more excited with the talented new cast we're starting to assemble for our 'Smurfy' reboot. "

"Get Smurfy" has a tentative release date of March 31, 2017.
