Viewers will be shocked to see not only one, but two sudden deaths when Fox's series "Gotham" returns for its second season.

Cinema Blend reports that a couple of major characters will "bite the dust" so soon in the upcoming installment. The show creators are reportedly using these deaths to jumpstart "a more serialized, arc-driven" plotline, miles different from the type of storytelling used during season 1.

While Fox is still keeping a tight lid on who will say goodbye among the expanding roster of characters, the website posits that TV Guide  is pertaining to Captain Essen (Zabryna Guevara) as the one who will suffer "a sudden and unexpected death." Since Michael Chiklis is slated to join the Gotham City police department as Captain Nathaniel Barnes, it is possible that he will take over Essen's position.

As for the other one, hints about the death states that it will be someone very close to James Gordon (Ben McKenzie). The cop will reportedly be reeling from this person's demise that it will serve as a motivating force for him throughout the season. Considering that James does not have a knack for establishing personal relationships, there are two obvious choices — Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) and Dr. Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin).

James' old lover is currently serving her time in the Arkham Asylum. Her death, if it does happen, would not be a complete shock to the viewers, much less to James, considering the people she is associated with. But if she were the one to kill his current love interest, Leslie, that will certainly have a big impact on James for the entire season.

These, however, are just guesses as viewers need to watch the show to be sure. What the website promises instead is that the perpetrator of these mayhem will be the new set of villains out to cause chaos in Gotham City, led by Theo Galavan (James Frain) and his band of criminals called the Maniax. Of course, there is still Jerome (Cameron Monaghan), who could be the Joker.

"Gotham" season 2 will premiere on Monday, Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
