Prepare to have your hearts torn out of your chests again when Grey's Anatomy returns for its 13th season. One important character will likely say goodbye to the show.

According to rumors, the show may kill off one of its key characters this season and this time around, it could be former chief Richard Weber (James Pickens), who has appeared depressed and exhausted from all the broken relationships surrounding him, reported Hall of Fame.

The last death of a major character broke the hearts of loyal fans of the show Meredith Grey's (Ellen Pompeo) better half Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) was killed off via an unexpected vehicular accident. Even after one season, fans still haven't recovered from the loss. However, rumors are already swirling that another similar drama will unfold this season.

One of the series' original characters — Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) — will also be the prime focus of season 13. It can be recalled that at the end of season 12, Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) rejected Alex's proposal and confessed to Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) that she was previously married and had successfully escaped from an abusive relationship. However, Alex misunderstands the situation and beats up Andrew, which results in dire consequences.

According to Shonda Rhimes, this will take a toll on their relationship. Alex could even face serious jail time for landing DeLuca in the ER.

Meanwhile, the issue of domestic abuse will be explored this season when Jo's background is unraveled. "I don't think that I ever think about doing things, like, 'Oh, we're doing a domestic violence story as an issueIt felt like it was time to tell Jo's story, and it felt like it was time to tell Jo's story especially in the context of Alex, who he is and how he grew up. Alex is so defined by who he used to be and who he is trying to become, and so is Jo," Rhimes shared with EW.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 13 will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
