'Grey's Anatomy' season 13 spoilers, news: Fans clamor for Alex–Meredith relationship

It has been a disastrous season so far for Alex (Justin Chambers) as after losing his cool on Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti) last season, the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital veteran doctor has been attracting negative attention in the hospital as well as dealing with a lawsuit filed against him. Despite all this, he has never lost the support of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and some fans are reading a bit into the arc predicting that there might be something planned for the two moving forward in "Grey's Anatomy."

While almost everyone turned against him when he beat Andrew to a pulp and almost cost him his life, it was Mer who rushed to his side first and offered a game plan. Obviously, that plan did not have legs to stand on as Alex willingly gave himself up early in the season. But that did not stop the head of general surgery to continue supporting her friend throughout this whole ordeal. Even when Jo (Camilla Luddington), who was ultimately the root cause of everything, left him, as she thought it was for the greater good, Mer still kept on forging through with Alex.

In a last-ditch effort to change his mind about taking a plea bargain that will put him behind bars, Mer sent a voice message seemingly admitting that more than anything else, she is afraid to be without Alex.

"There were five of us, and now it's just you and I, and it can't be just me," she pleaded. "Please... don't."

While it has yet to seen whether this changes Alex's mind or not, fans got a twinge of longing in her voice possibly suggesting romantic feelings

Since then, more and more viewers have been getting behind Alex and Mer's potential love line in the future of "Grey's Anatomy." What is interesting is should this pan out and Alex pushes through with serving his sentence, how will they be able to handle this new relationship between them? The two have been good friends for such a long time and it will certainly have some effect on the overall dynamics of the Shonda Rhimes-created show — should the medical drama tread this direction.

"Grey's Anatomy" is taking its mandatory midseason hiatus and will be back for new episodes on Jan. 18, 2017, on ABC.
