While both Nvidia and AMD have released new top-tier GPUs with their respective signature architectures, both new Pascal-based and Polaris-based graphics cards are launched as a full lineup. This means that aside from top-tier models, fans can also get to enjoy new GPU tech with the entry-level-priced base models. Nvidia has already announced the GTX 1060, while AMD recently released the RX 480.

How do these two base-model GPUs compare to each other?

AMD has the advantage of being the first in line to launch, since the RX 480 was made available more than a month ago. The GTX 1060, meanwhile, has just been announced this month and has just started rolling out to the market.

Performance-wise, both GPUs claim that although the cards come with aggressive, entry-level prices, performance level remain on par with the step-up versions in the GTX and RX lineup. The GTX 1060 is configured with 6GB of memory, and runs boosted at 1.7 GHz. The RX 480 meanwhile, has at least two versions – the 4GB and 8GB VRAM variants. Meanwhile, though both cards feature virtual reality support, some observers are saying that the GTX 1060 may be better equipped in handling VR content, since it is set up for better thermal controls. However, the RX 480 is a clear winner when it comes to full HD gaming – although both cards support 1080p display, the RX 480 has a slightly lower price tag.

As for its availability, the AMD RX 480 also enjoys a more widespread market since it came out first. Meanwhile, the GTX 1060 has been only more than a week out in the market. If the sales figures for the top-tier GTX 1080 and 1070 can be an indicator (there are reports that the step-up cards are in short supply), fans can expect the GTX 1060 to also perform fairly.
