"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is still two years away from being shown in theaters but director James Gunn is already busy putting the pieces together. In an interview with Screen Rant, Gunn confirmed that several new characters will be introduced in the sequel, with at least two of them eventually becoming new members of the Guardians.

Gunn stated that he wants two female members on the team. With Gamora already filling one spot, it is very likely that the other female will be a new character. This has led to fans speculating if the helmer will introduce Phyla-Vell or Moondragon. What has been confirmed is that Gunn does not want to introduce more Earth characters.

According to the report from Screen Rant, one new addition to the team is a character fans are already familiar with. This makes Yondu (Michael Rooker) the most likely candidate since he played as anti-hero and foster father to the first film's lead, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt). Fans have also speculated that if Yondu isn't the new member, then it might be an Avenger, with the most popular vote going to Thor or Iron Man.

Then there is also the fact that Gunn wants "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" to be a story of fathers, indirectly hinting that the movie will reveal who Star-Lord's mysterious father is. In the previous film, it was presumed that Star-Lord's father is human but it was disclosed that he is of "an ancient race."

The report reiterates Gunn's previous statement that Star-Lord's father in the movie is not J'Son of Spartax as he is in the comics. Instead, the director is going for a more original approach. He once stated last year that the film will introduce his favorite superhero and it is possible that this new superhero may be Star-Lord's biological father.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" opens in theaters nationwide on May 5, 2017.
