'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' update: Pom Klementieff cast as Mantis

Marvel Studios

A crucial casting info about "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" has just been confirmed. It was already known that Canadian actress Pom Klementieff is officially on board the movie for a mystery key role, and this bit of info was kept tightly under wraps for days until today.

As it turns out, the star will be playing the role of Mantis from the comic books. The half-Vietnamese, half-German character, as some Marvel fans would recognize, is a martial arts expert and the believed eventual Celestial Madonna.

Mantis lived and trained among a sect of the militaristic alien race Kree called Priests of Pama after her father abandoned her. She became a full blown fighter until her entire memories were wiped, forcing her to live a normal life.

Mantis will factor greatly in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and it being tagged as a key role, Mantis could very well be the newest member of Star-Lord's motley crew, as per Collider. It remains to be seen what comic book arc will be used or how the introduction of Mantis will be laid out.

In other casting-related news, Matthew McConaughey recently turned down Marvel's offer to play the role of the villain in the sequel of the Marvel blockbuster hit. It looks like Marvel is again in search of an actor to fill in the enemy shoes but there is no available update about this aspect yet.

It is also still unclear who will be the new big bad in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." There were no accessible details as to which specific villainous character McConaughey was offered with.

Billed to reveal who Peter Quill's father is, the film should also be in search of the right actor to play the role of Chris Pratt's character's dad. Details should trickle in soon with the production set up to commence in February.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will be released May 5, 2017.
