'Hellboy' reboot spoilers: Ian McShane teases his version of Professor Broom and Hellboy's daddy issues

Neil Marshall and David Harbour are teaming up for a different take on Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman's "Hellboy." Not only will the new one feature a hard R-rating and an array of witches and demons, there will be changes made to Professor Broom as well, specifically to his relationship with Hellboy.

Ian McShane, who will portray the titular character's adoptive father, revealed to Fandom recently that the reboot will explore a different dynamic between the duo. Unlike the 2004 movie, which saw Hellboy (Perlman) accepting Broom as his father without much fuss, their take will dissect the father-son relationship in a new light. This time, the two will somewhat be at odds and Hellboy will have some trust issues.

"You don't start with the birth of Hellboy... but the relationship between [Hellboy and Broom] is quite crusty," he explained. "Does he trust his father? [Hellboy asks], 'Why didn't you kill me? I'm a monster.' It's a little bit of a psychological battle against Hellboy."

He continued, "There's one important moment in [the film] when [Hellboy] sort of thinks he's fighting his own people, the outsiders. So, he's being used by the insiders, which is me, if you like."

Despite that, McShane maintained his version of Broom will still share similarities with the late William Hurt who played the role in the previous films. "I'm sort of playing this part as a slight homage to John [Hurt]," the actor revealed. "I mean, I'm not playing it like him, obviously... but the relationship [with Hellboy] is very much the same."

Directed by Marshall, the "Hellboy" reboot also stars Harbour as the lead character, Milla Jovovich as Nimue, The Blood Queen, Penelope Mitchell as Ganeida, and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan. The movie is set to open in theaters on Jan. 11, 2019.

The film, according to its rumored synopsis, follows Hellboy in England as he attempts to take down Nimue. However, their battle reportedly brings about the end of the world, a fate he desperately tries to avoid.
