'Humans' season 1 recap: Laura decides to return Anita in episode 2

Laura and Anita on HumansFacebook/ HumansAMC

This week on "Humans," Laura decided to return Anita, and George was horrified to have been given a new Synth, Vera.

Last week, Anita was seen carrying off Sophie into the night, and the episode began with Laura waking up to find that their house was eerily quiet. She looked into Sophie's room, and the little girl was right there, sleeping soundly while Anita was in the kitchen making breakfast. Laura saw that Sophie had changed her pajamas sometime during the night and found the ones that she was wearing last night were wet and in the hamper. Later, Laura tried to hide her displeasure when Sophie asked her to cut off her sandwich crusts for her, just like Anita does.

Laura got a photo album from her closet and found Anita lurking. She shouted at the Synth and asked why it's lurking.

Anita told her, "By default, I attempt to be as unobtrusive as possible to promote a relaxing environment."

Laura told her that she was watching her. Anita smiled and said she was watching her, too — Laura was right in front of her.

Meanwhile, Fred was being tested by Hobb and his colleagues, and by tapping into the Synth's memory, they found a recurring one in which he was underwater and trying to reach out to Anita.

When asked why Fred is so important, Hobb said, "He's penicillin. He's the atom bomb."

Leo entered Silas' lair and found him working on a Synth. After fighting with Leo, Silas told him that Anita was given a full system wipe, which means she has a new personality. Leo was able to with some help from Max.

At George's place, the doorbell rang and George told Odi to hide in the shed. On the other side of the door was the woman from social services, and George promptly told her that he recycled Odi. Vera came in and noted that he had mold in his house. George said that she was there to do as told and nothing more. Later, Vera brought him some low sodium bean soup instead of the grilled cheese sandwich that he asked for. When the Synth told him that the soup was better for him, he called customer service and said that he wanted to return her, not knowing that Vera was nearby and listening.

Laura got a call from Mattie's school, and upon arriving, she was told that Mattie was caught tampering with one of the school's Synths. Laura asked the principal if she had any proof and said that if they didn't have evidence, then they couldn't blame Mattie for it. Laura took Mattie shopping, pleased that she had an anti-Synth ally but warned her not to do anything to Anita since everyone else in the family likes her so much.

Later, Sophie had a nightmare and asked Anita for a hug, but the Synth said she couldn't do so without permission. Sophie asked again and Anita cuddled the scared little girl. Laura found them and she told Anita to get into her car. Anita offered to drive and asked where they were going, and Laura told her that she's taking her back.

Next week, Laura will find herself having to thank Anita after saving Toby's life, Mattie accidentally gives Leo a lead on his missing Synth, and George and Odi escape from Vera.

"Humans" airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
