'Iron Man 4' news: Mel Gibson to direct and Robert Downey Jr. to return?

Will the billionaire superhero return?Facebook

It's no surprise that Hollywood veteran actors Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. are good friends. Gibson helped Downey when no one wanted to hire him during the days when he had drug-related troubles.  Downey is helping Gibson now that Hollywood has turned sour on the latter due to his anti-Semitic comments.

Downey sees "Iron Man 4" as an opportunity to bring Gibson back in the spotlight. For a while now, talks about "Iron Man 4" have been circulating, but Downey himself shut it down saying that there will be no "Iron Man 4" but he will be part of other Marvel movies.

However, back in October, Downey spilled to Deadline that he might return as Tony Stark on "Iron Man 4" if Gibson directs it. Deadline even asked if they can use his answer as a headline to the article and Downey said "Why not? That movie would be bananas."

But before this, Downey talked about his friend and how Gibson doesn't need mass forgiveness for what he did. Downey also proudly described Gibson as a changed man and given that, Gibson should be given another chance.  So, what does Gibson have to say about it?

According to The Daily Mail, Gibson said, "I'm pretty good at directing... I think I got some statues for it... I think I can do it."

He also congratulated Downey for the arrival of his new baby girl.

In an interview with Mario Lopez for Extra, Gibson gave almost the same answer as to joining Marvel's "Iron Man 4," saying, "I think I'm a better director than actor... I hope somebody gives me an argument on that."

Did Gibson just say yes to directing the movie? If so, will Downey go through "Iron Man 4?" It's pretty sure that it's not just up to Downey because Marvel has already released its 5-year plan and "Iron Man 4" isn't included in the list.  But then again, if Downey says it's a go, surely, Marvel can work their way around it.
