Canadian Christian singer Justin Bieber upset many of his fans when he recently cancelled the meet and greet portion of his "Purpose" tour, citing physical and emotional exhaustion as the reason.

On his Instagram account (@justinbieber), the singer shared a photo of himself hugging a young fan. He then writes, "Love [you] guys ... I'm going to be cancelling my meet and greets. I enjoy meeting such incredible people but I end up feeling so drained and filled with so much of other people's spiritual energy that I end up so drained and unhappy."

Bieber said he wants to "make people smile and happy," but "not at my expense." As thankful as he is for his fans, the "Sorry" hitmaker confessed that meeting his fans always leaves him "feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted to the point of depression."

"The pressure of meeting people's expectations of what I'm supposed to be is so much for me to handle and a lot on my shoulders. Never want to disappoint, but I feel I would rather give you guys the show and my albums as promised. Can't tell you how sorry I am, and wish it wasn't so hard on me ... And I want to stay in the healthy mindset I'm in to give you the best show you have ever seen," he said.

Even though Bieber's post received over a million likes, a lot of fans expressed their disappointment and anger in the comments section. Some fans called him names, but others were quick to defend him.

"Of course he's going to give up on his fans... Sooner or later he's going to quit his job and leave you guys to suffer," someone sarcastically wrote.

"The photo makes my heart melt but the caption broke my heart," another added.
