What better way to light up a cold, dark winter than with a candlelit tour of a beautiful cathedral?

This winter, Lichfield Cathedral will be running its popular candlelit tours, led by an experienced cathedral guide.

The hourlong tours will give visitors a unique insight into how medieval people would have experienced the magnificent building and offer a different perspective of a building normally enjoyed by visitors during daylight.

The nature of the tour means visitors will be able to inspect the building in minute detail as it is investigated up close by candlelight.

Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral, the Rev Canon Dr Pete Wilcox, said: “For hundreds of years, at night time and in winter months, people were only able to see our extraordinary cathedral by candelight.

“A tour of this holy place is an inspiring experience under any circumstances. The atmosphere of a candlelight tour is never to be forgotten.”

Tours will be rounded off with delicious mulled fruit punch and mince pies in the medieval beamed Old Stables, now the centre for cathedral visitors.

Tours begin at 7.30pm and cost £12.50 per person.

They will run on the following dates:

October 26 and 27
November 9, 21, 22 and 23
January 9, 10, 11 and 31
