Lola Godheld becomes first British gospel artist to win Dove Award

London-based urban gospel singer Lola Godheld, made history this week as she became the first ever British Gospel artist to win an ‘Urban Recorded Song of the Year’ Dove Award.

Speaking to Premier Gospel Radio’s Muyiwa Olarewaju, on the Gospel Tonight show, Lola revealed her excitement at what the award means, “[It’s] an open door for the US to hear what the UK has to bring, because, I don’t really think a lot of people over there know much about what we’re doing over here, so it can kind of bring us all together as one body, because that what we are.

"It’s just opened the door for many other great artists like Victizzle and Utteronce, Franklyn and a whole load of other people.”

The awards night, whose presenters included Deitrick Haddon, Marvin Sapp and Francesca Battistelli was held on 20 April at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. Previous winners have included BeBe & CeCe Winans, Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary.

Social networks were steaming on the night, with proud Manager, Mary J King tweeted - @MaryJ_King: Proud of my girl @LolaGodheld for being the FIRST British artist to win a Dove award!!

Lola revealed a little of what’s to come, “We’re breaking boundaries and barriers, and trying to help put platforms up for other people. I think it’s about time we changed things, and we’re young and radical. We’re bringing it!”

Premier Gospel Station Director, Muyiwa said, “I have always said, given the opportunity, UK Gospel will do well in the USA.

"This is why Premier Gospel has tirelessly thrown resources behind people like Lola. We will continue doing this with programming like the UK Gospel Show with Yinka this Easter and more live concerts, and events.

"I am certain what Lola has achieved marks the beginning of the recognition of UK artists and their work in the USA!”
