MacBook Air 2014 vs Surface Pro 3: Which portable laptop works better?

Since time immemorial, fans of Apple Inc.'s OS and Microsoft's Windows have been pitting the latest products from these leading tech companies against each other. This time, the latest Surface Pro 3 from Microsoft is being compared side by side with the next-generation Apple Macbook Air.

Which device will win the battle between the two portable computers in the market today?  Here is a comparison between the two devices:

Weight and Size

MacBook AirWikipedia

Macbook Air is the lightest laptop line from the Cupertino, CA tech giant. The 11-inch laptop weighs 1.08 kilograms, measures 300 x 192 x 17mm and comes in a 0.68-inch thick body. On the other hand, Microsoft made sure that their product could beat the competition, with only 292 x 201 x 9.1mm body that is just 0.55 inches thick and weighs merely 800 grams.

Display

Apple's lightweight MacBook Air has an 11.6-inch LED display with 1366 x 768 screen, but the Surface Pro 3 from Microsoft has a far better screen resolution at 2160 x 1440, proving that it offers a far better viewing experience compared to the Apple device.

Operating System

The discussion about the better operating system between Apple and Microsoft has been going on for ages. The MacBook Air naturally runs using the signature OS X Mavericks of the company, and the next-generations will probably use the upcoming OS X Yosemite.

Mavericks features the brand's iCloud integration capacity that allows Apple users to synchronize their laptops to other Apple gadgets such as the iPad and iPhone simply by signing in with their own Apple ID account.

Surface Pro 3

Meanwhile, the Surface Pro 3 is supported by Windows 8.1 Pro. Like Apple's iCloud, Windows also has the OneDrive storage service which allows users to keep their multiple device accounts and mobile apps in sync. Because of this, users can easily access their Office 365, Lync, Outlook and Skype accounts with just a single log in.

Keyboard and Trackpad

One of the selling points of the MacBook Air is its easy-to-use keyboard and trackpad features. It makes typing and input tasks more enjoyable. On the other hand, the Surface Pro 3's trackpad and keyboard looks too cramped and harder to use because of its smaller size.

Ultimately, there are no winners in this battle. Both devices are superb in their own ways. It is up to the users to decide according to their preference.
