The MacBook Air series has been around for eight years, and yet, during that time, very little improvement has been implemented with each new iteration. However, that is speculated to change with a few much-needed improvements coming with the 2016 model that is expected to launch in late October.

According to MacWorld, Apple is going to hold an event on Oct. 27, and this may be when the company will unveil a brand new lineup of MacBooks and iMac desktops. The report further states that if a new MacBook Air will be released, it is likely only going to be for the 13-inch model. The 11-inch model may not see an update until early 2017.

This will be in conjunction with a statement issued by Apple CEO Tim Cook. When asked if the company was ending the MacBook lineup of laptops, Cook reportedly stated that he is committed to these products and that consumers should "stay tuned" for an upcoming announcement, which may take place on Oct. 27.

If the laptop does launch, it is expected to feature a USB Type-C port, a Touch Force trackpad, and a Touch ID sensor. There are also rumors that it may replace the traditional function key set with a touch panel that will change its display and touch options according to context.

However, it is also pointed out that Apple may be canceling the MacBook Air series soon, given how successful the iPad Pro has become. With the iPad Pro blurring the line between a tablet and laptop, it may become the successor to the MacBook Air series in the next few years.

Apple has yet to confirm or deny if they are indeed hosting a launch event in the last week of October, and they still have to confirm if one of their upcoming products that are to be shown in the event is the new MacBook Air.
