Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will be playing Wayne Rooney next season as a central striker after the English national played majority of the previous season at midfield.

"I have listened to you. You have more knowledge than I. Now Rooney is there," Van Gaal told reporters in a news conference.

The 29-year old footballer last played as a main striker for United in the 2011-12 season where he netted 34 goals.

According to Rooney he plans to score more than 20 goals in the upcoming season.

"The two seasons I've really done that as a lone striker are my two best goalscoring seasons. I hope to score 20 or more goals again. If I'm playing as a striker, then I will be disappointed if I can't do that again," Rooney stated according to Sky Sports.

"I've played different roles over the years for United but you only have to look when I play for England as a striker, I score goals," he added.

Meanwhile in the conference Van Gaal also spoke about Rooney's first term as the club's captain.

"I could not expect more. He is a great captain. Better than I had expected. He is fully accepted by the players. That is also very important. I can choose but the players decide. The players have to accept the captain," he said according to BBC Sports.

As Rooney plays main striker for United next season, reports say the club is also heavily favored to land Barcelona forward Pedro and is looking to sign Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller.

Both Pedro and Muller have been reportedly open to leaving their current clubs and Manchester United is a likely destination for the two.

Van Gaal is looking for forwards to play along Rooney, Javier Hernandez, and James Wilson following the departure of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
