Mel Gibson is continuing his Hollywood comeback by making a sequel to his blockbuster film "The Passion of the Christ." Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the film, will be reprising his role for the sequel titled "The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection."

According to a 2016 report from The Hollywood Reporter, writer Randall Wallace confirmed he has started making the script for "The Passion of the Christ" sequel which is focused on Jesus' resurrection. Wallace had worked with Gibson before — he wrote the script for Gibson's 1995 Best Picture Academy Award winner "Braveheart." Wallace said that he and Gibson started to seriously consider the possibility of the sequel while making the 2016 Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing Academy Awards winner "Hacksaw Ridge." Gibson directed the war drama while Wallace co-wrote the script.

In November 2016, Gibson confirmed Wallace's statement during his appearance on Stephen Colbert's "The Late Show." He gave a few hints on what can be expected for the upcoming film. He told Colbert that the sequel will look into what happened during the Resurrection with the focus on Jesus' followers. Gibson went into telling Colbert that the movie may explore what happened during the time Jesus died — he quoted the Apostles' Creed saying Jesus "descended into hell." When asked about the release date for the sequel, he said that it may take three years since it is a big project.

In January 2017, Caviezel confirmed his reprisal of the role of Jesus. According to USA Today, Caviezel said the sequel will be the biggest film in history. He refused to give further details, but he emphasized that the upcoming film will be great.

"The Passion of the Christ" was released in 2004. It was a massive success, earning $611.9 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.
